McClatchy, a California-based newspaper chain, is considering buying Tronc, the Chicago-based newspaper chain that owns the Chicago Tribune and many other papers, some speculate. Tronc owns nine other newspapers in addition to the Chicago Tribune, including The Baltimore Sun and New York Daily News. McClatchy owns more than 30 papers in 14 states and made $904 million in revenue last year.
Other companies have set sights on Tronc, including the Donerail Group. The Donerail Group is an investment firm that has discussed acquiring Tronc since August and values the corporation at more than $700 million.
While some like McClatchy are looking to acquire Tronc in its entirety, other media companies are pursuing ownership of specific papers that Tronc owns.
