Whether it’s a daughter doing homework with her boyfriend or an elected board discussing important matters, such activities occurring behind closed doors can be worrisome — although one official says this has been necessary in Mount Airy’s case.
“It is not our desire to do that,” Mayor Jon Cawley stated during a recent meeting of the Mount Airy Board of Commissioners, after being questioned beforehand about a rash of closed sessions by the board.
In a six month-period from Jan. 15 of this year to July 16, city officials went behind closed doors at 11 of the 12 council meetings conducted during that time frame.
The board, which normally holds regular meetings on the first and third Thursdays each month, did not convene on July 2 due to that date’s proximity to Independence Day.
