Veteran journalist joins Gaston Gazette newsroom

A veteran journalist has joined the reporting staff of The Gaston Gazette.

Kara Fohner will be covering all aspects of county government, in addition to other news and feature-writing duties.

Fohner, 30, a native of Ohio, has lived in North Carolina since the age of 14.

A graduate of West Henderson High School, Fohner went on to attend Brevard College in Brevard, graduating in 2015 with a bachelor of arts in English.

From August 2015 to August 2021, Fohner served on the staff of the  Lenoir News-Topic, about 50 miles northwest of Gastonia in Caldwell County.

Fohner served as the News-Topic news editor and primarily covered public safety. During her time at the News-Topic, Fohner was the News-Topic's most highly awarded journalist in the North Carolina Press Association's annual journalism contest, winning or being part of teams that won 10 awards.
