Karen Chávez named Asheville Citizen Times interim executive editor

ASHEVILLE – Long-time journalist Karen Chávez has been named interim executive editor of the Asheville Citizen Times, Mark Russell, executive editor of The Commercial Appeal in Memphis and South regional deputy editor for ACT parent company Gannett, who oversees North Carolina, announced Nov. 3.

“We’re thrilled to have Karen serve as interim executive editor. She is an award-winning journalist and a fierce advocate for doing watchdog journalism who also wants to do stories that offer solutions,” Russell said. “We are looking forward to Karen’s leadership making a difference in the newsroom and the community.”

Chávez started with the Citizen Times in 2000 as the outdoors reporter, after working at newspapers in Montana, Idaho and Arizona, and a brief career as a National Park Service ranger.
