ITC to hear newsprint tariff testimony in July

Posted

The International Trade Commission will listen to testimonials from both supporters and non-supporters in regards to Canadian paper tariffs on July 17. The tariffs have been in place since January and have created a 22% increased tax rate for newsprint all across the country.

The tariffs were brought about by complaints from the North Pacific Paper Co., a Canadian company that supplies paper, including newsprint to most U.S. newspapers. NORPAC alleged that it was not receiving enough subsidies from the U.S. as compared to other countries. The Department of Commerce and the International Trade Commission have started an investigation to see if the allegations are true and the hearing on July 17 is a part of that investigation. Both departments will gather evidence for and against the allegations.

The current tariffs will remain active until the investigation ends and a final decision is made, which is set for Sept. 17, 2018.
