Capital Gazette staff describe horror of Maryland shooting as attack rattles newsrooms across US

Five people were killed in a newsroom shooting at the Capital Gazette in Annapolis, Maryland on June 28. The next day, journalists at the Gazette still published an issue in tribute to the victims and their colleagues. They also tried to remind people the mission of the journalist: to seek the truth.

The event has sparked fear across the country for the safety of journalists. Newsrooms are the most shaken up, one journalist mentioning that the job is scary at times because people do not always like what reporters write. Also, the notion that reporters spread fake news does not help in easing tensions among the public and newsrooms.

The incident has led many in the media to call for increased security as more newsrooms have questioned their safety. A couple of hours after the Gazette shooting, the Ogden Standard-Examiner, a local newspaper in Utah, received a call from a man demanding the ideological positions the paper held. While the caller did not make a specific threat toward the paper, he encouraged violence against the liberal news media.
