Wayne King dies at 77

Forner Daily Tar Heel editor (1962-63) Wayne King died of natural causes on Feb. 17 at his farm in Surry County. He was 77.

King's career included a Pulitizer Prize for his coverage of the Detroit riots in 1967, while working at the Detroit Free Press. In addition he worked for the New York Times and as journalism director of the program at Wake Forest University where he was instrumental in in creating the school's journalism program.

A memorial service for King will be held at 11 a.m. on April 1 at the Vintage Rose Chapel in Pilot Mountain.
