PARTICIPATE in a STATEWIDE READING PROJECT starting January 2008. Publish a 16-chapter serialized story that will please younger readers and adults.
The story takes you back to 1941-1942 and World War II. Close reading reveals much about World War II and its impact on North Carolina's coastal towns terrorized by U-boats. The book Taffy of Torpedo Junction also introduces readers to Taffy and her grandfather and North Carolina's Outer Banks and its language, customs and traditions.
The story comes to you FREE of CHARGE. Thanks to UNC Press for making it available for serialization. TO ORDER for your newspaper or your newspaper group, simply complete and return the enclosed form OR call (919) 843-5648 or email sandynie@unc.edu (Sandra Cook).
The book comes with study guides and maps, photos and background stories about WWII, the brogue spoken on the Outer Banks and the author and book. To view the educational resources, visit www.ncnewspapersineducation.org.
Newspapers will also receive a promotional piece that can run in their newspaper or that be distributed as a flyer and sample chapters to take to sponsors that might pay for classroom newspapers ordered by teachers.
Newspapers may be running stories about local WWII veterans or holding events for them to speak and show their medals and share experiences, etc. Newspapers, teachers, parents and others may find additional ways to localize the reading of Taffy of Torpedo Junction.
