Duke University/Green-Rossiter Award
For Distinguished Newspaper Work In Higher Education
First Place: Eric Ferreri, Jane Stancil & Benjamin Niolet
The News & Observer, Raleigh

Judge's comments: Ferreri's piece on the death of Venoble Hall was a joy to read. The coverage of Mary Easley's pay raise appears to have turned over all the stones. Stancil did a fine job on the story on women's colleges.

Second Place: Corey Johnson
The Fayetteville Observer, Fayetteville

Judge's comments: Johnson did the job of a true reporter in digging out the undisclosed names of 3 FSO chancellor finalists. He also took the story a step higher in showing that North Carolina is alone in its secrecy rules.

Third Place: Staff
The Daily Tar Heel, Chapel Hill

Judge's comments: Great work by Brown on UNC's political action committee. Naylor did an interesting piece on Holden Thorpe.
